It’s a matter of adjusting the indicator chain with the trigger in second gear.
Rule of thumb is that the body of the spindle should just be poking out in second.
The trouble is that indicator chains may have been swapped out over the years, some were longer than others. Once locked in position it should run fine. If you’ve added a new shifter cable it may stretch requiring periodic tweaking.

The illustration below shows the indicator chain in the second position.
The shoulder of the chain (#1) is flush with the end of the axle. I set mine with a tiny bit more poking out. Fine adjustment with #3 and lock with #2.
